Melbourne Cup delivers for Umoja

A luncheon to celebrate the Melbourne Cup and to raise funds for Umoja, was held on November 1st, in Windsor, Australia. The Rotary Club of Kurrajong and North Richmond organised the event and worked tirelessly to make the day a huge success! Fun and games interjected a delicious lunch and the raffles, auction and hat parade were all presented by an excellent MC, Mr Rob Ewin. Patrick Clifton read a letter from Arusha addressed to the Rotary Club. Thank you to Peter and Helen Webb and all the Rotary members who worked on and behind the scene, raising $3,100 on the day and for their continued support for the students at The Umoja Centre.

Enrich your life - Sponsor with us!

With the new year fast approaching, so is the start of the new Umoja term! In January 2012 we will be offering 40 really deserving young people the chance of a free education and thus a brighter future!

We would like to make a special appeal for new sponsors to come forward! Our aim is to be able to assign two sponsors for each of our bright young stars. Our Youth Sponsorship Programme ensures that we can keep our centre running; providing funds for teachers, books, food, medical care and much more.

If you would like to help provide an amazing group of disadvantaged young people with the chance of a better life then why not become an Umoja sponsor? You will be giving the life changing gift of education (and in doing so - enjoy the fantastic experience and warmth that being an Umoja Sponsor brings!!)

The sponsorship rates for 2012 are $35 AUD / USD, £18 per month. Give up a couple of lunches or a night out for us!

Isaya Denis

Isaya is a 2010 graduate of Umoja and an exceptionally clever one at that! He was a student of the intermediate group and particularly enjoyed his Key Skills and English lessons. Now, at the age of 25, Isaya wishes to enroll at the ‘Arusha Institute of Accountancy’ to fulfill his dream of becoming an accountant.

Isaya is excited to see what else the college course holds for him as he has so much to learn! We hope to find him a new sponsor so we can make his dreams come true! Can you help? Please email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Our First Graduate to Donate!

Zablon Loy is the first student to have donated back to Umoja.

He is now a successful chef in Bahrain having graduated from Umoja and then completing training with Jobortunity in 2010.

Zablon donated 100,000 TSH towards our recovery from a major theft.

Thank you Zablon we are so proud of you!

Umoja artists

Recently we have been encouraginging the students to explore their creative talents. Many of the students at Umoja have never had the opportunity to explore art before so this has been an exciting opportunity for them.

The East African Tingatinga style of painting was developed in Tanzania in the second half of the 20th century. The naïve style appeals to the many tourists who pass through Arusha. Perhaps one day some of our students will be able to earn a living from their art.

Become a volunteer

The Umoja Centre is always looking for skilled volunteers. If you have a skill to share please contact us to discuss how and when you can help.

At the moment we are particularly keen to hear from teachers of English or Computer Skills, there is also plenty of work to do in the office.
