Land for A Sustainable Umoja Centre
The Umoja Centre is run from rented premises in Njiro, Arusha and opened in April 2009 to forty students from disadvantaged backgrounds. We now need (ideally for our facilities) to purchase two acres of land and after much research, we now know that Umoja needs $40,000 USD. ($40,000 AUD, £25,000)
By ensuring our centre’s survival and building to our own design, we could improve classrooms in their capacity and facilities, expand our library, sanitary and kitchen facilities and rely on alternative funding and donations not only to expand our curriculum; but make the centre more sustainable. In addition we will aim to secure funding for solar panels to provide our electricity rather than relying on the inefficient and inconsistent local supply or generator.
In line with this development, our yearly student admissions will increase as well as the quality of their education and our facilities improve. As The Umoja Centre continues to grow and expand, it will realise its vision as not only an educational centre for students, but also as an information and resource centre, serving as a means for putting citizens in touch with sources of information related to health (such as HIV/AIDS), rights, and small business.
With many areas of vacant land currently on the local market, as soon as funding is secured we can begin the process to buy land and build!
