At Umoja we believe that education is essential to the improvement of our students’ lives as well as the development of Tanzanian society as a whole. However education is only truly effective if certain other factors are tackled. Things that we often take for granted in the western world can be completely unobtainable for many people here in Tanzania.
Our Youth Sponsorship Programme is vital to our continued success; however if you wish to make a one off donation this will certainly never be turned down! Below are some ‘gift’ ideas that will give you an idea of the ways we can utilise your donations to care for our students’ welfare and ensure that their education can be most effective.
Give the Gift of Health
Cost: £20/$30 (US)/$32 (AUS)
Unfortunately, due to poverty, many people in Tanzania are unable to pay for a consultation with a doctor or for medicines. We offer small amounts of money to students in need - to pay for essential medical expenses, ensuring that they can return to health as soon as possible!
Your kind gift will enable us to offer help when it is most needed and prevent students enduring ailments that can deeply affect not only their studies but long term health.
Give the Gift of Sight
As with medical expenses, our students simply cannot afford eye-tests. We offer eye testing at the centre and any students found to have sight problems are then referred to an optician and fitted with glasses if necessary.
Your kind gift will enable us to guarantee that our students can see a bright future!
Give the Gift of Reading
Cost: £15/$23 (US)/$25 (AUS)
English is of vital importance to our students’ success. All secondary education and above is taught in English and many businesses will only employ people with a knowledge of this international language. We try and keep our library stocked with a range of reading materials – from factual books, encyclopaedias and dictionaries to basic level readers.
Your kind gift will enable us to provide reading materials for all levels and abilities.
Give the Gift of Clothing
Cost: £12.50/$20 (US)/$21.50 (AUS)
Poverty means that people have to miss out on essentials and often the less essential things are completely unobtainable. Many of our students have very few clothes indeed - some have been known to only own one T-Shirt for example! We try and reward the students’ achievements by giving practical prizes such as clothing, watches or stationery.
Your kind gift will mean that our students will not have to wear their poverty on their sleeves.

Cost: £7.50/$12 (US)/$13 (AUS)
A Home Pack enables us to buy essential items that a student can take home to help themselves and their family with health, personal hygiene and day to day life.
Your kind gift will mean that we can purchase the students tea, sugar, toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, sanitary items and washing powder – ensuring the students’ home lives are enhanced as well as their education!
Give the Gift of Stationery
Cost: £5.00/$8 (US)/$8.50 (AUS)
Even a small donation goes a long way! This will enable our students to obtain items such as exercise books, pens, pencils and a new school bag.
Your kind gift will mean that our students can make the most of their opportunities!
